Many of us have experienced some kind of back pain at least once in our lives. I’d like to give you ideas on how to avoid back pain or, if you’re having back pain, how you can obtain relief. There are many causes of back pain including bulging or herniated discs, sciatica, pinched nerves and misalignments of the spine or pelvis or sacroiliac joint. If you are prone to back pain or back aches here are some steps you can take to minimize them. First, be careful in the morning, our back is most vulnerable the first hour after awakening. Strenuous physical activity that first hour after arising from bed should be avoided. Many people find it helpful to do appropriate gentle stretching in the morning. Second, be careful when lifting. Bend at your knees and not at the waist, and then keep the object lifted as close to you as possible. Also tighten your abdominal muscles slightly during the lift.
